Mount Kamuning will be taken down, so it’s time to finally climb it

A pedestrian footbridge along EDSA near the MRT’s GMA Kamuning station went viral back in 2018 because of its inexplicably high cost and incredibly high elevation, which is why people have dubbed it “Mount Kamuning.” Two mountain climbers even scaled the footbridge in full climbing gear, sharing photos and videos documenting their feat.

It was the butt of jokes for a while, but as with everything in this dear old country of ours, everyone appears to have ended up shrugging and saying “Well, what are you gonna do” and just put up with it.

And then earlier this year, news came out that Mount Kamuning was finally going to be taken down and replaced with a lower, more convenient footbridge. Before that happened, though, I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to finally try the footbridge out myself. So while waiting for my smashed steamburger at Sweet Ecstasy, I decided to go up Mount Kamuning, camera in tow.

My burger was ready by the time I got back, which was great; I’m pretty sure I burned quite a few calories. That footbridge really isn’t an easy climb, and I imagine it being an annoying part of the daily life of someone who has to traverse it regularly. Something like that should not have been built to begin with—it’s too high, and it’s really not convenient. Hopefully, we’ll see something a lot better take its place. Installation works for the new footbridge are already underway.
