In January, it was reported that a detention basin was completed in Barangay Sta. Monica, Novaliches, specifically under the basketball court of Palmera Subdivision Phase 3. The basin, which holds up to 1,700 cubic meters of water, is expected to help with the flooding problem in the area. Another one is under construction in Araneta Avenue, which famously suffers from extreme flooding, and is expected to hold up to 2,000 cubic meters of water. More flood control projects led by the city are still underway, and I certainly hope they’ll be in operation before typhoon season and habagat come around.
I generally don’t like to praise politicians for doing the bare minimum aka their jobs, but I have to give Mayor Joy Belmonte a nod of approval for taking evidence-based action and working with experts on this problem.
In the meantime, we all should keep making noise about the anomalous flood control projects in the country, hold both contractors and their buddy politicians responsible for killing Filipinos, wrecking the economy, and wasting the country’s budget.
